Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my child along to the chess club?
* Children are welcome to the chess club but anyone under the age of 16 would need to be supervised by a parent. We are not responsible for minors but at the same time, we wouldn't want to get in the way of a junior from playing at a local chess club.
Is the club child friendly?
* The club is child friendly although please be aware that the club consists mainly of adults and around 50% of the attendees drink alcohol and sometimes it can be a bit loud when people are having banter during games and discussing tactics etc. There is a quiet space too, in the form of a smaller room with a door, if this is preferrable. My suggestion would be to just turn up and see how it is for you.

Are girls welcome at the chess club?
* Yes girls/ladies are welcome at the chess club although we only have a couple of female chess players currently and they don't come along every week. We would like to have more female chess players at the club as it will help to encourage more in the near future. Our goal is to have a WGM (woman grandmaster) in Farsley one day!

What is the average age group at the chess club?
* We currently have members aged between 16 and 85 but all ages are welcome.
Do I need to be an experienced chess player to come along?
* No you don't need to be an experienced player. We have members from absolute beginner right through to experienced club player. We don't currently have any professional players such as grandmasters, but we can dream!
Do I need to know the rules of chess to come along?
* Ideally you would need to at least learn the basic moves before coming along to chess club but we are more than happy to give pointers during games to help you improve.

Do I need to bring anything with me?
* No you don't need to bring anything with you, all equipment is provided, including chess pieces, boards and clocks. I'm not exactly sure how many chess sets we currently have but I would guess around 15, which is enough for 30 attendees.

Are there any subs or fees to pay?
* There are currently no subs to pay. I recently had some donations from our dedicated members which helped us to purchase additional equipment.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?
* We now meet downstairs in the restaurant so I believe that it is now wheelchair accessible.

Is there a quiet space for someone with autism or another sensory condition?
* We do meet in the main restaurant area but the restaurant is quiet on a Wednesday evening, however, if you would like to bring some ear muffs or ear plugs just in case, that's perfectly okay.
