Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my child along to the chess club?

Children are welcome at the chess club. However, anyone under 16 will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian. While we are not responsible for minors, we certainly don't want to discourage young players from joining in and enjoying the experience at a local chess club.

Is the club child-friendly?

Yes, the club is child-friendly. However, please note that the club is mostly made up of adults, and about 50% of our members enjoy having a drink during games. This can sometimes lead to a bit of noise as people chat and discuss tactics. We do have a quieter space available in a smaller room with a door if that suits you better. We suggest coming by and seeing how the atmosphere feels for you and your child.

Are girls welcome at the chess club?

Absolutely! We warmly welcome girls and women at the club. Currently, we have only a few female players, and they don't attend every week. But we're eager to encourage more women to join us, as we believe this will inspire even more participation in the future. Our long-term goal? To have a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) representing Farsley one day!

What is the average age group at the chess club?

Our members range in age from 16 to 85, so we truly have something for everyone. All ages are welcome!

Do I need to be an experienced chess player to come along?

Not at all! Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced player, you'll fit right in. We don’t have any grandmasters at the club (yet!), but we’re a welcoming group for players of all skill levels.

Do I need to know the rules of chess to attend?

While it’s helpful to know the basic moves of chess before attending, don’t worry if you’re still learning! We’re more than happy to offer tips and guidance during games to help you improve.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

No need to bring anything! All the equipment you need, including chess boards, pieces, and clocks, is provided. We currently have around 15 chess sets available, which should be plenty for our 30 attendees.

Are there any fees or membership costs?

We don't currently have any membership fees. Thanks to generous donations from our dedicated members, we've been able to purchase additional equipment for the club.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

Yes! We now meet downstairs in the restaurant, and the venue is wheelchair accessible.

Is there a quiet space for someone with autism or another sensory condition?

While we meet in the main restaurant area, it's typically quiet on Wednesday evenings. However, if you'd feel more comfortable, you're welcome to bring earplugs or earmuffs. We want everyone to feel at ease.
